This webinar reports on recently-completed doctoral research focusing on dialogue interpreters’ experience of task performance. The results of the study shed light on the aspects of task performance that interpreters monitor and the control mechanisms they employ during performance. In addition to reporting on the research study, the presenter will discuss the place of models in interpreter training and present the models proposed in her dissertation. During the last portion of the webinar, the presenter and special guest Cindy Roat will discuss the importance and role of research and theory in dialogue interpreter training.

Learning Objectives:

• Present recent research findings related to monitoring and control of performance in dialogue interpreting and discuss their implications for interpreters, interpreter educators, and researchers. 
• Describe possible models of dialogue interpreting & their potential for use in interpreter education.
• Discuss the importance and role of research theory in dialogue interpreter training.

About the presenter:

Rachel E. Herring holds an M.A. in Translation and Interpreting from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, a Masters of Advanced Studies in Interpreter Training from the University of Geneva (Switzerland), and a Ph.D. in Interpreting from the University of Geneva (Switzerland). She teaches interpreting at Century College (Minnesota) and is an interpreter at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. She has presented on interpreting and interpreter training in a variety of venues, and has been involved in the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare's training-of-trainers webinar series. She also developed and facilitated continuing education modules for the CATIE Center at St. Catherine University. Her academic work centers on expertise studies, with a focus on cognitive processes and skill acquisition.

About the special guest:

Cynthia E. Roat, MPH, is an international consultant on language access in health care and patient navigation. Over the past 25 years, Ms. Roat has made significant contributions to the field as an interpreter, teacher, consultant, organizer, researcher, mentor and author. Her most recent book, Healthcare Interpreting in Small Bites, is being adopted as an ancillary text in many interpreter training programs. From 2012-2015, she managed Seattle Children’s Hospital’s innovative Bilingual Patient Navigation program. She is a founding member and former board chair of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care, a founding member of the Washington State Language Access Coalition, and current chair of the Northwest Translators and Interpreters Society’s Community Interpreter Division. She is known nationally as an engaging speaker, a knowledgeable resource, and an energetic advocate for language access in general.
