This webinar will begin with a definition of a “heritage speaker”. Special considerations for trainers, who develop and facilitate training to support heritage speakers in their journey to becoming healthcare interpreters, will also be identified.
In addition, a guided activity entitled Progressive Interpreting Practice using Short Parallel Videos, which was specifically developed for these types of students, will be presented in order to equip trainers with a practical tool to use in the classroom.
Finally, there will be an emphasis of the role of technology and mindfulness in the learner’s positive experience during the learning process

About the presenters:
Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Natasha Curtis is a nationally certified Spanish Health Care Interpreter (CHI), translator, trainer and consultant. With a BA in Translation from Universidad del Salvador, and an MA in Translation from Kent State University, Natasha is a thought leader in the field of language access and her passion for quality has fueled significant advancement within her circle of influence. She developed the first pediatric hospital-based Language Access Program in the Akron area, and has an unwavering commitment to the promotion of quality in language access services as a pivotal strategy to impact access, effectiveness and cost of health care for diverse populations.
Glenn Martinez is Professor of Hispanic Linguistics and Chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at The Ohio State University. Dr. Martinez received a PhD in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an MPH in Border Health from the Texas A&M School of Public Health. His current research interests focus on language access for Latino patients in the US health delivery system. He has published extensively on issues of language policy in healthcare, language practices in health care delivery, and language pedagogy for health care professionals. His research has been funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
