This webinar will address key factors to consider when assessing clarity of non-native speech.  Participants will listen to and assess accented speech samples and identify important areas of focus for pronunciation instruction.  Participants will also gain a greater understanding of the first-language linguistic variables that influence English pronunciation patterns, and the listener factors that affect perception of accented speech. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the influence that first-language sound structure has on English pronunciation patterns
  2. Explain the difference between accent, intelligibility and comprehensibility as measures of pronunciation proficiency
  3. Identify important areas of focus when addressing  English pronunciation instruction

 

About the presenter:

Amber Franklin holds a PhD in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Washington. She conducts research in the areas of accent modification and listener responses to accented speech. Her passion for successful communication across varieties of English was shaped by her upbringing in the linguistic mosaic of Toronto, Canada.
