Participants learned from Mary Esther Diaz, a highly experienced trainer, how to design medical
training at the appropriate level for interpreters, find audiovisual resources available to add clarity
and interest, and find healthcare terminology in a variety of languages—including languages of
limited diffusion.

Upon completion of this webinar, participants were able to:

  • Identify steps in the design of advanced medical training for interpreters
  • Prepare a basic lesson outline for teaching medical topics for interpreters
  • List a large number of resources for health information in common languages and
    languages of limited diffusion


About the Presenter:

Esther Diaz is an ATA certified English-Spanish translator and interpreter with more than 30 years of
experience as a medical translator and trainer, and has served in a variety of capacities in the
National Council on Interpreting in Health Care. An ATA certified English-Spanish translator and
interpreter, Esther was the training director for the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, where she
taught medical terminology for 19 years and worked as an in-house medical translator and disability
examiner. Esther created the seven-course Translation and Interpretation Certificate Program at
Austin Community College and has taught interpreter workshops for refugee resettlement agencies
throughout Texas.  She is the Vice-Chair of the Advisory Committee on Qualifications for Translators
and Interpreters in Texas, a founding member of the Texas Association of Healthcare Interpreters
and Translators, co-founder of the Austin Area Translators and Interpreters Association, and former
ATA Medical Division Administrator. Esther received her B.A. in Spanish and M.Ed. in Adult Education
and Human Resource Development Leadership from the University of Texas at Austin.
