The interpreter’s hearing is a vital instrument for connecting with clients and sustaining their livelihood. The increased demand for interpreters to work both remotely and in person has posed many challenges in communicating effectively and optimizing the interpreting experience. Interpreters have limited tools and protections to care for their hearing and prevent hearing injuries. Hearing health protection strategies are necessary to perform interpreting work effectively. This session focuses on teachable strategies for hearing injury prevention, exploring interpreter self-advocacy tools and best care practices for maintaining and optimizing hearing health in the course of interpreting work.

Learning Objectives:

  • Equip interpreters with strategies to protect their hearing and prevent injuries.
  • Empower interpreters to advocate for their safety and that of their colleagues by identifying potential injuries and the risks of permanent hearing damage.
  • Promote improved working standards by encouraging interpreters to share hearing health protection strategies with their peers and leadership.
