Leading by example is one of the best ways for interpreter educators to encourage learners to adopt new skills, strategies, and ways of thinking. However, when it comes to the ethical principle of impartiality this can be a major challenge, namely due to educators' own unconscious biases. In this session, interpreter educators will be challenged to examine their own biases, especially as related to sex, sexuality, and gender. By deconstructing the bias of cisheteronormativity, we’ll examine how we may inadvertently inculcate biases in our students, as well as the effects the perpetuation of these biases may have.  These effects aren't just limited to our students, but can also extend to our students' colleagues, consumers of their interpretation services, and beyond.  Participants will be given tools and tips to formulate a plan to address the perpetuation of cisheteronormativity in their teaching practices.

About the Speaker:

Kelly (Grzech) Henriquez, BA, CMI-Spanish, CHI-Spanish

Kelly (Grzech) Henriquez (she/they) is a dual-certified Spanish medical/healthcare interpreter in Richmond, Virginia. She acquired her BA from Virginia Commonwealth University with a concentration in Spanish and completed their SETI (Spanish/English Translation and Interpretation) program. Kelly began her career in language services at a local safety net clinic and has since been interpreting on-site. During the pandemic, she began her YouTube channel for interpreters to provide free and accessible continuing education.  Shortly thereafter, she became a medical interpreter trainer with Americans Against Language Barriers (AALB) and was recognized as the 2023 AALB Interpreter Educator of the Year.
