Note-taking for consecutive interpreting is an important skill for interpreters, regardless of the setting they work in.  Teaching note-taking is also an important skill for interpreter trainers. In this webinar we will explore theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning note-taking for consecutive, with a focus on dialogue interpreting settings. We’ll discuss how note-taking fits into the dialogue interpreter’s toolbox; ways in which consecutive note-taking differs from other kinds of note-taking; and approaches and strategies for effective note-taking. We will also discuss planning and structuring teaching and learning of note-taking within training courses.

Note: The presentation will include some examples of practical exercises for developing note-taking skill, but the content and material is intended for interpreter trainers.

Rachel E. Herring, PhD

Rachel E. Herring is Director of the Translation and Interpreting Program at Century College (Minnesota) and a per diem staff interpreter at Children's Minnesota. Rachel holds an M.A. in Translation and Interpreting from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, a Masters of Advanced Studies in Interpreter Training from the University of Geneva, and a PhD in Interpreting from the University of Geneva. She has presented on interpreting and interpreter training in a variety of venues and has been part of the NCIHC Home for Trainers Webinar Workgroup since its inception.
