With Eric Hardt, MD

Continuing education approval: CCHI and IMIA

Dr. Eric Hardt has been a geriatrician for over 40 years, training, working, and teaching in NYC and Boston with a focus on underserved populations including immigrants with LEP. He has been board-certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Palliative Care. He has taught health care professionals and medical interpreters, each at many different levels of experience, on issues of cultural competence across the board, but especially on geriatrics and end-of-life care across language differences. This session will focus on the role of and challenges for the medical interpreter in situations including breaking bad news to the patient/family, ICU family meetings, and decision-making regarding end-of-life care. Anecdotal examples will be discussed along with research-based data on the impact of LEP in these situations.

About the Presenter:

Eric J. Hardt MD

Dr. Eric Hardt, MD was a primary care geriatrician in Boston, MA and has over 48 years of experience in the medical field. He graduated from Tufts School of Medicine in 1974. He is affiliated with Boston Medical Center. Currently retired, Dr. Eric Hardt was awarded the Tony Winsor Award at the 2021 Massachusetts Area Health Education Center’s “Paving The Way to Healthcare Access” Conference.

Eric is the coauthor of critical research, some of the first of its kind, showing the financial costs and clinical consequences of language barriers, and demonstrating the difference in error rate between ad hoc and professional interpreters. Eric used his position to give recognition and credibility to the medical interpreting field, which was instrumental to the passage of state laws, institution-level policies, and culture change.

Without his contributions, relentlessly over decades, many more LEP patients would still be relying on their children or the receptionist for interpretation today.
